The Covington Lady Chargers got a bit of a scare Thursday night at home in the District 15-AA title game, but in the end the same thing that happened in 2019 and 2020 happened: Covington won a district championship.

After falling behind by three in the first quarter, Covington held Fayette-Ware to single-digit scoring in the second and third quarters and took control of the game en route to a 50-37 win the program’s third straight district title.

Covington, which has not lost a district game since 2018, now moves on to the Region 7-AA tournament, kind of. Because none of the teams in District 16-AA are playing basketball this season, the region tournament will consist of the top four teams from 16AA: Covington, Fayette-Ware, Millington and Bolivar.

The Lady Chargers host third-seeded Millington tonight and, with a win, will likely host Fayette-Ware again on Wednesday in the region title game. Region champs host a sectional game Saturday and losers travel.

Covington (22-5) was led Thursday by Felia Fayne, who scored 16 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. Kalynn Howard scored 15 points and NaKaya Gilliam and CorTayza Flowers each added eight.
