No surprises in U.S., Tennessee senate and house elections

There were no surprises when it came to the elections of Tennessee's legislators. Republican Bill Hagerty of Nashville handily won the U.S. Senate seat with 75.04 percent of votes (19,546). Voter turnout in Tipton County this year was 70.5 – the highest ever

Among the headlines this election was its historic voter turnout. During early voting, a record 21,929 people cast their ballots. A total of 27,487 of Tipton’s 38,968 active voters cast ballots in the November 2020 election. Brighton and Munford elect their first Black aldermen

On Tuesday, the Town of Brighton and the City of Munford elected the first Black aldermen in each town’s history. In Brighton, former police officer Sonny Foster earned the second-most votes in the race where four aldermen are elected. Brighton has a new mayor and three new aldermen

Stephanie Chapman-Washam defeated former mayor Gus Smith to be Brighton’s next mayor. Incumbent mayor Sarah Crocker, who was the first woman to be mayor in Brighton, was appointed to the position in 2015 after Jeff Scott left office. Rivers, Toliver, Chastain win race for Mason aldermen

Virginia Rivers and two newcomers won their races for aldermen this week. Rivers, who has served Mason for several terms, handily won re-election Tuesday with 29.23 percent of the vote.
