Mike David steps down as Brighton head football coach

By Jeff Ireland on November 9, 2021

Three days after a season-ending playoff loss to Springfield last Friday, Brighton head football coach Mike David told the school's administration he was resigning. David, who has been coaching football at various schools for 26 years, said he was "retiring" as a varsity head football coach but plans on remaining at Brighton as a teacher. "I'm very grateful to all the players … [Read more...] about Mike David steps down as Brighton head football coach

Central’s big plays prove too much for Brighton to overcome

By Jeff Ireland on September 21, 2021

Four touchdown runs of 69 yards or more. And a guy named Jamarious Brooks could not be stopped. That's pretty much all you need to know when understanding why Brighton lost to Memphis Central 57-38 Friday night in a Region 8-5A game at home. Brooks, who finished with 387 yards and six touchdowns on 14 carries (that's 28 yards per carry), had touchdown runs of 74, 69 and 85 … [Read more...] about Central’s big plays prove too much for Brighton to overcome

Munford and Covington will be heavy favorites in their games tonight. That's according to Sonny Moore, who puts together power rankings every week for each of the 341 high school football teams in Tennessee. Going by Moore's algorithm, Munford should beat Overton by 34 points and Covington is a 40-point favorite over Ripley. As for Brighton and Tipton-Rosemark, things are … [Read more...] about Brighton-Central game highlights Week 5 action

By Jeff Ireland on August 28, 2021

[metaslider id=9410] There were some unbelievable, and possibly historic, statistics that emerged from Friday night's Northpoint Christian-Brighton game in Brighton. The teams combined for nearly 1,400 all-purpose yards, including an astounding 658 rushing yards for Brighton, and 143 points. There were 19 touchdowns scored and, incredibly, zero turnovers. And perhaps the … [Read more...] about Brighton scores 10 touchdowns in wild 74-69 win over Northpoint

Brighton rushing attack overwhelms St. Benedict in season-opening shutout

By Jeff Ireland on August 24, 2021

[metaslider id=9379] On paper at least, Friday's season opener in Brighton figured to be a competitive game. St. Benedict played Munford to a very close game last year and plays in the largest private school classification. Brighton was missing its best offensive weapon. It was not competitive. Braxton Sharp broke a 75-yard touchdown run on the first play from scrimmage and … [Read more...] about Brighton rushing attack overwhelms St. Benedict in season-opening shutout

Brighton’s Dima Barker follows his brother to Rhodes College

By Jeff Ireland on December 18, 2020

[metaslider id=7468] Brighton senior defensive lineman Dima Barker has a name you don't hear everyday around here. It's a Russian name and an ode to his mom, Tatiana Barker, who was born in Russia and moved to the United States in her 20s. "It's a very common name in Russia," Barker said. There's nothing common, however, about Dima as a football player and high school … [Read more...] about Brighton’s Dima Barker follows his brother to Rhodes College
