Brighton-Central game highlights Week 5 action

Munford and Covington will be heavy favorites in their games tonight.

That’s according to Sonny Moore, who puts together power rankings every week for each of the 341 high school football teams in Tennessee. Going by Moore’s algorithm, Munford should beat Overton by 34 points and Covington is a 40-point favorite over Ripley.

As for Brighton and Tipton-Rosemark, things are expected to be much more competitive.

The Cardinals host Memphis Central, which is ranked fifth in this week’s Associated Press Class 5A state poll. Brighton is not ranked, but, according to Moore, Central is just a one-point road favorite.

Tipton-Rosemark, which heads to Somerville to play Fayette Academy, is a five-point underdog.

Here’s a quick look at each of tonight’s area games:

What: Brighton (3-1) vs. Memphis Central (3-0)

Where: Brighton

When: Friday at 7

Players to watch: QB Nick Harvell, RB Braxton Sharp, DL Jacob Rodriquez, RB Ty Stark

One thing to know: Central is ranked fifth in this week’s Associated Press Class 5A state poll.

What: Munford (2-2) vs. Overton (1-3)

Where: Munford

When: Friday night at 7

Players to watch: RB Auvic White, QB Jordan Bell, WR Icarius Hodgin, LB Ben Cerniglia

One thing to know: Though Munford dropped a heartbreaker last week to Dyersburg, Auvic White was nearly unstoppable, rushing for 156 yards on 23 carries.

What: Covington (4-0) vs. Ripley (3-1)

Where: Covington

When: Friday night at 7

Players to watch: RB Jalen Fayne, RB Jamarion Dowell, LB A.C. Mason, LB Christian Barbee

One thing to know: Covington has played Ripley more than any other team. The Chargers lead the series 33-18.

What: Tipton-Rosemark (2-2) vs. Fayette Academy (2-2)

Where: Somerville

When: Friday at 7 p.m.

Players to watch: QB Payne Fullen, OL Gibson Phillips, WR Sam Cannon, WR Tyler Byrd

One thing to know: Rosemark’s defense was stellar in last week’s 41-7 win vs. Macon Road Baptist, holding its opponent to fewer than 50 rushing yards.
