Week 4 previews: Covington looking to claim Tipton County title again

By Jeff Ireland on September 10, 2020

As far as I know, there’s no trophy for whichever team wins the unofficial Tipton County football title for beating the other two. Hey, there’s an idea for somebody to tackle.

One thing I do know, however, is that Covington has beaten Munford and Brighton the last two seasons and would have two more trophies in its trophy case if that hardware existed.

Covington beat Munford in Week 1 this year meaning a win Friday night over Brighton would give them three titles in row.

Here’s a look at that game and what Munford and Tipton-Rosemark will be facing in Week 4.

What: Covington (3-0) vs. Brighton (2-1)

Where: Brighton High School

When: Friday at 7 p.m.

Chargers to watch: RB Marcus Hayes, QB Carson Ruffin, LB Lareko Burton, RB Jamarion Dowell

Cardinals to watch: QB Nick Harvell, RB Wesley Ervin, TE Bryce Chaco, LB Gavin Haynes

Story lines: This probably sounds like a broken record, but Covington’s rushing attack is devastating opponents again. The Chargers are averaging 7.7 yards per carry through three games … Covington is ranked second in the Class 3A state poll for the second straight week. Other West Tennessee teams in the 3A poll include Westview (6th) and Milan (7th). Alcoa is first … Keep an eye on Brighton freshman Ty Stark. He has big-play ability and broke a 40-yarder for a score last week vs. Millington … Sophomore Tyler Todd, who filled in at quarterback when Harvell was hurt, caught two TD passes from Harvell last week.

What: Munford (2-1) vs. Harding Academy (0-1)

Where: Munford High School

When: Friday at 7 p.m.

Cougars to watch: QB Jaxon O’Neal, RB Auvic White, RB Traveon Hawkins, WR Kelton Mason, LB Icarius Hodgin

Story lines: O’Neal had one of the best games of his career in last week’s win over St. Benedict. He completed 9 of 14 passes for two TDs and picked up 88 rushing yards … Hodgin was a beast on the defensive side of the ball last week with seven tackles … Harding Academy’s game last week was its first of the season. Evangelical Christian School, the defending DII-AA state champs, beat them 44-0 … Munford was originally scheduled to open region play against Southwind this week. The Jaguars, and all the other Shelby County Schools teams, are still sidelined due to COVID-19.

What: Tipton-Rosemark Academy (0-1) vs. University School of Jackson (3-0)

Where: TRA

When: Friday at 7 p.m.

Rebels to watch: QB Payne Fullen, WR Jalen Hurt, OL Heath Harrald, RB Zak Vinson

Story lines: This will be a huge challenge for the Rebels when they take on USJ, which is ranked second in the state in DII-A. USJ beat Rosemark 30-7 last year … This is the third league game for USJ and the second for TRA, which lost to Jackson Christian last week … USJ has looked very impressive in the early going, beating Union City, Trinity Christian and Nashville Christian by a combined score of 110-17.
