A LOOK AT EACH OF THE FOUR LOCAL FOOTBALL PLAYOFF MATCHUPS
What: Munford (9-1) vs. Kenwood (6-4)
When: Friday at 7 p.m.
Where: Munford High School
Players to watch: Munford – RB Tay Starks, DL Kylan Sharp, LB Kailer Dortch, RB Bricen Turnage
The skinny: Munford will be in a situation they have not been in all year: coming off a loss. Central surprised a lot of people last week by handing Munford its first loss of the season and denying the Cougars another region title. The loss also made the Cougars’ first and (hopefully) second round games much more challenging.
What’s next: Beech or James Lawson
What: Brighton (3-7) vs. Kirkwood (8-2)
When: Friday at 7 p.m.
Where: Kirkwood
Players to watch: Brighton – LB Timon Wiggins, RB/WR Carnelius Douglas, QB Cay’den Young, TE Brett Cothran
The skinny: Not too many people outside of Brighton are going to believe a three-win team is going to win a playoff game, but Brighton is not your normal three-win team. The Cardinals have played some very good teams tough, including a Central team that ended up being the region champs. A quick start in a hostile environment will key to Brighton’s chances.
What’s next: Page or Hendersonville
What: Covington (9-1) vs. Wooddale (6-4)
When: Friday at 7 p.m.
Where: Covington High School
Players to watch: Covington – OL Jackson Kirby, LB Ty Beard, QB Walker Davis, RB Jaheim Smith, LB Chad Delashmit
The skinny: Covington lost to one of, if not the, best teams in the state last week for it first loss of the season. Knowing the intensity and motivational skills of Charger head coach J.R. Kirby, the Chargers will be fired up this week. Wooddale’s not bad for a four seed, but it seems likely the Chargers will roll in this one.
What’s next: White House Heritage or Sycamore
What: Tipton-Rosemark Academy (4-6) vs. Friendship Christian (8-2)
When: Friday at 7 p.m.
Where: Friendship Christian
Players to watch: TRA – RB Nix Fullen, QB Jackson Posey, LB Levi Pitt, OL Smith Howe
The skinny: TRA is much better than its 4-6 record. The Rebels played a seriously beefed-up non-league schedule and played some teams (see USJ) much tougher than in years past. With that said, playing at Friendship Christian is a tall order. This is potentially Nix Fullen’s final game of his high school career and the Rebels will need a huge night from him to leave town with a win.
