Postseason update: The Covington Lady Chargers are district champs again

By Jeff Ireland on March 1, 2021

The Covington Lady Chargers got a bit of a scare Thursday night at home in the District 15-AA title game, but in the end the same thing that happened in 2019 and 2020 happened: Covington won a district championship.

After falling behind by three in the first quarter, Covington held Fayette-Ware to single-digit scoring in the second and third quarters and took control of the game en route to a 50-37 win the program’s third straight district title.

Covington, which has not lost a district game since 2018, now moves on to the Region 7-AA tournament, kind of. Because none of the teams in District 16-AA are playing basketball this season, the region tournament will consist of the top four teams from 16AA: Covington, Fayette-Ware, Millington and Bolivar.

The Lady Chargers host third-seeded Millington tonight and, with a win, will likely host Fayette-Ware again on Wednesday in the region title game. Region champs host a sectional game Saturday and losers travel.

Covington (22-5) was led Thursday by Felia Fayne, who scored 16 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. Kalynn Howard scored 15 points and NaKaya Gilliam and CorTayza Flowers each added eight.

In other action:

• The seasons for the Brighton and Munford girls came to an end Saturday on the road in the first round of the Region 7-AAA tournament. Arlington, the top seed from District 14-AAA, defeated Brighton, 68-13, and Bartlett edged Munford, 36-32.

• Tipton-Rosemark’s girls finished one win away from a second straight trip to state, losing a sub-state game 61-59 to Webb School on Friday.

• Covington’s boys lost 49-47 Friday at Haywood in the District 15-AA consolation game. The Chargers travel to Fayette-Ware on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. region semifinal. The winner move into the region title game. The season is over for the loser.

• Munford’s boys fell at home, 64-62, to Hardin County Friday night in the District 13-AAA title game, and Brighton beat Dyer County, 67-52, at home in the consolation game. The Cardinals play at Arlington tonight at 7 in a do-or-die region quarterfinal. Munford plays the Bartlett-Dyer County winner Wednesday night in the region semifinals.
