Mt. Carmel: A fire threat and a funeral

By The Leader on August 12, 2019

I’m starting the column on a Thursday night this week as I will be at the National Association of Conservation Districts Convention at the Opryland next week. I will add onto it till Sunday with new news!

This week’s Farm Report:  Winter wheat is looking good for all it’s been through this winter. We met with Tipton Farmers Co-op’s Wyatt True for lunch today to book and pay for seed, and to put up money for this year’s crop. It was a nice lunch.

We awoke Tuesday morning to the smell of an electrical fire. We bolted out of bed and got dressed to finally find the hot water heater we were having trouble with had shorted out, but, luckily, it had tripped the breaker! I was told that if it hadn’t the house would have filled with carbon monoxide and that would have been very bad!

James, Clint and I attended Charles Yoakum’s very nice and appropriate funeral Wednesday. The bagpipes playing and the meticulous folding of the American flag were especially touching. If there could be a good funeral, it was.

Afterward we bought a new water heater, which Clint and Nathan Rogers installed. Crisis over!

I took Caroline to see the queen of Mt. Carmel, Catherine McCalla, today and we had a fun visit with her and her caretaker, Doris Ann. Caroline found a plastic tea set and served us tea and cookies. It was a fun visit; the queen is doing very well!

On our prayer list at the Covington Church of Christ are Jimmy Weir, Rosie Barnes, Billy Chapman, John Dickey, George and Paulette Watkins, Jack Burris, Linda Gordon, Gary Bowie, Houston Hall, Tina Whaley and so many friends and relatives of our members, Jackson Hughey and all of our servicemen and women.

Happy Birthday this week goes to Al Chaney and Mary Beasley on Jan. 28, to Brylee Love on the 30th, to Lawson Maxwell and Shelby Blair on the 31st, to Lauren Wall on Feb. 1 and to Mickey Cannon and Scarlett Cates on the 2nd!

Happy Belated January birthday at Clopton United Methodist Church to Shirley Davie on January 3rd, to Jean Boyd on the 5th, to Helen James and Ron Regis on the 6th, to Linda Long on the 8th, to Courtney May on the 12th, to JoNell Morgan on the 13th, to Gene Watson on the 14th, to Paul DeLashmit on the 18th, to Marion Davis on the 19th, to Bill Turner on the 21st, to Joelle May and Don Ramage on the 23rd, to James Wilson on the 27th, to Jacob Nelson on the 28th and to David Twisdale on the 30th!

Their Men’s Breakfast is this Saturday, the 3d, from 7 – 9 a.m. Everyone is welcome!

“Thanks for Reading” this week goes to Charles Large! Sa-lute!

This week’s Farmer’s Almanac Quote: “The root system of a large oak tree, if strung in a straight line, would be several miles long.” Wow!

Don’t see your shadow Groundhog!

Until next week . . .
