Lady Cardinals take two from Munford to win district championship

By Jeff Ireland on May 12, 2022

Entering Wednesday afternoon’s District 14-AAA tournament title game, or games, as it turned out, Brighton needed to beat Munford twice to claim the title.

Thanks to some stellar pitching and power hitting, that’s exactly what they did.

The Lady Cardinals beat Munford 7-4 in game one and 10-0 in the nightcap to take the championship. Both teams are moving on to Monday’s region semifinals. Brighton will host Obion County and Munford travels to Newbern to play Dyer County. Loses are done while winners qualify for the region title and sectional games.

Katelyn Jones pitched all 13 innings of the two games, allowing just one earned run while striking out 10.

Brighton’s power was on full display in game two. Adin Shelton and Brie Howard each homered, Kelsey Camp tripled and Maddie Perkins and Kamryn Bridges each doubled. More than half of Brighton’s eight hits were for extra bases. Brighton led 1-0 before scoring four in the third and two in the fourth. Three runs in the bottom of the sixth ended the game.

Jordan Wilson, Lexi Billings, Katelyn Daugherty and Kyleigh Pullen each singled for Munford.

Game one was much closer. Brighton led 5-0 before Munford one in the fourth and two in the fifth to cute the lead to two runs. Two Brighton runs in the top of the six gave them enough breathing room.

Howard, Camp and Shelton each doubled for Brighton and Kersten Hendrix had two hits and two RBIs.

Claire Geiger had a big offensive game for Munford, going 3 for 3. Billings struck out seven over 5.1 innings, but took the loss.
