Covington softball defeats Millington, Haywood in district action

The Covington Lady Charger softball team played three games at the Morris Hunter Invitational in Southaven on Saturday against some tough competition, dropping two of three to fall to 10-6 on the season.

St. Benedict blanked CHS 3-0 in the opener. Ana Gover’s single and Kalynn Howard’s double were the only Covington hits. Lauren Vickery took the loss in the circle, allowing five hits and a walk while striking out four.

Olive Branch took the measure of the Lady Chargers 5-2 in the second game. The offense still struggled with just five hits. Gover and Charleigh Cole singled and Howard added a pair of singles and a double. Gover took the loss. She went 4.1 innings giving up 10 hits and five runs. She walked two and struck out seven.

Kinley Escue tossed a three-hitter in the nightcap against Wynne (Ark.), salvaging one game for CHS with a 4-1 win. She pitched five innings allowing three hits and a run with one strikeout. Gracyn Ramsey, Cole and Escue had singles. Howard singled twice and tripled. Kenzie Mathis tripled and had two RBIs.

In other action:

• Covington beat Millington 12-3 on April 7. Vickery got the win, going two innings allowing a hit and a walk with five strikeouts. She was joined in the circle by Cole (six strikeouts) and Anna Gover (two strikeouts).

The offense pounded out 15 hits. Hannah Kirby led the way with a pair of singles, a double, five RBIs and two runs scored. Gover had two singles, three RBIs and a run scored. Howard had a single, a double and two runs scored. Cole singled and scored twice. Vickery had a pair of singles and a double. Anna Grace Godwin singled and scored twice. Kayla Pitts singled twice and had an RBI. Anna Reese Cousar, Lanie Stafford and Kendall Narcisse each scored a run.

• Haywood was the next victim, falling 13-2 on April 8. Cole got the win, giving up three walks with three strikeouts. Vickery went three innings allowing a hit and two walks while striking out six. Gover was in the circle for two innings. She allowed a hit, two walks and two runs with two strikeouts.

The offense was clicking. Pitts had an RBI and a run. Gover singled and doubled twice, driving in two with four runs scored. Howard had two singles, a double, an RBI and four runs scored. Sarah Richardson singled and drove in a run. Vickery singled three times, doubled and had four RBIs. Kirby tripled and scored. Cousar scored a run and Stafford had an RBI and a run scored.
