State investigators are looking into a Monday afternoon shooting involving Tipton County sheriff’s deputies that left one man critically wounded.
At the request of 25th Judicial District Attorney General Mark Davidson, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said its special agents are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, which occurred shortly after 4 p.m. in the 7600 block of Richardson Landing Road in Drummonds.
According to preliminary information, deputies responded to a report of an altercation between two brothers. When they arrived, one of the men fled on foot, leading deputies on a short chase to a mobile home on the property. For reasons still under investigation, the situation escalated, and a deputy fired at the man, striking him. No law enforcement officers were injured.
The man was critically wounded, and the TBI said the investigation remains active and ongoing. Agents are working to determine the sequence of events that led to the shooting, collecting evidence and conducting interviews. The TBI will share its findings with the district attorney general for review and consideration.
The bureau noted that it serves as a fact-finding agency and does not determine whether an officer’s actions were justified. That decision rests with the district attorney general.
The TBI does not release the names of officers involved in such incidents, referring those inquiries to the respective law enforcement agencies.
