Man killed in accident on Mt. Carmel Road Thursday

The Tennessee Highway Patrol has confirmed a traffic accident on Mt. Carmel Road resulted in the death of a 37-year-old man.

According to the preliminary report, just after 7 p.m. Thursday night the Ford Fusion driven by Trenton Rankin was hit head-on by a Ford F-150 driven by 23-year-old Waylon Jonakin.

Jonakin was reportedly traveling southbound on Mt. Carmel Road, over a hill crest near Trailer Drive, when he attempted to pass the vehicle in front of him. Rankin was traveling northbound, approaching the hill crest as well, when his vehicle was struck.

Rankin died at the scene. Jonakin was reportedly injured and is in stable condition.

Rankin leaves a wife and children.
