According to an affidavit filed in Tipton County General Sessions Court, Matthew Bogenschneider thought someone was breaking into his Munford home and he shot Cody Sonwineski through the front door.

Matthew Bogenschneider, 19, remains in jail after allegedly shooting Cody Sonwineski last Thursday in Munford.

Officers with the Munford Police Department responded to the scene at approximately 12:32 p.m. last Thursday and found Sonwineski, 29, in the front yard at 302 Bass Ave. suffering from gun shot wounds. He was taken to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Tipton in Covington and was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Bogenschneider, a 19-year-old who graduated from Brighton High School last spring, waived his Miranda rights and gave a statement. According to the affidavit, “He heard someone knocking on his door and windows. He stated he thought someone was breaking into his residence, obtained a Smith & Wesson .40-caliber handgun and the shot through the front door.”

Witnesses on the scene told investigators Sonwineski attempted to call the suspect before the incident to let him know he was picking up clothes from the house.

The relationship between Bogenschneider and Sonwineski is unclear.

District Attorney General Mark Davidson requested the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation to assist the Munford Police Department with the investigation.

The home at 302 Bass Ave. is located about a quarter mile northeast of the Munford Post Office.

Bogenschneider, who is charged with reckless homicide, remains in the Tipton County Jail on a $100,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in Tipton County General Sessions Court on Friday.
