Covington, Munford hosting first round playoff games

By Jeff Ireland on November 1, 2023

The most exciting time of the season for high school football is here.

Covington and Munford will each host first round playoff games tomorrow night. Here’s everything you need to know:

What: Covington (8-2) vs. Hamilton (6-4) in the first round of the Class 3A state playoffs

When: Friday at 7 p.m.

Where: Covington

Players to watch: QB Braden Gover, RB Skylan Smith, RB Azarion Harris, WR Aden Deverell

Key storylines: This is Covington’s ninth straight state playoff appearance and 13th in the last 14 seasons. That’s a stat few programs in the state can match … Skylan Smith is the latest in a long line of Covington running backs to put up huge seasons. The junior has 1,703 yards and 27 touchdowns and is averaging a whopping 8.7 yards per carry.

What’s next: The winner faces Ripley or Sheffield in round two next week.

What: Munford (8-2) vs. Hendersonville (7-3) in round one of the Class 5A state playoffs

When: Friday at 7 p.m.

Where: Munford

Players to watch: QB Jordan Bell, RB Ty Stark, WR Isaiah Cobbs, WR Kollin Collier, DB Jay Dancey

Key storylines: Munford wideout Isaiah Cobbs, a Washington State signee, gets a lot of attention, and rightfully so. But his teammate, Kollin Collier, is also very dangerous on both sides of the ball. He caught four passes for 120 yards last week in a win vs. Central …Munford and Herndersonville have never played each other and have no common opponents this season.

What’s next: The winner plays Henry County or Central next week in the second round.
