Jaxon Sherfield, a 2025 graduate of Brighton High School, and rising sophomore Reese Russell will have a chance to do something really special next month: compete for a national championship.
The fishing duo has qualified to compete in the High School Fishing World Finals and National Championship June 24-28 at Oklahoma.
Sherfield has been an accomplished competitive fisherman since his freshman year at Brighton when the team got started. He recently teamed up with Russell and the duo has jelled quickly.
“I just got him in the boat after our winter break,” Sherfield said. “After about three or four times, he picked up everything. He’s gotten good really quick.”
In typical events, there are a few dozen teams. At national there will be hundreds.
“It’s huge,” Sherfield said. “We’re really excited and we’re going to see what we can against the best.”
The trip is not cheap and fundraising efforts are underway to help the duo bring a national title back to Brighton.
“What I am trying to do is send them and their familes out there cost-free,” Brantley Tillman, BHS assistant principal and fishing coach, said. “So we are taking donations if someone wants to help him because you’re talking about truck gas, boat gas, lodging, meals for about six days. I want him to go out in proper fashion.”
