Thomas D. Adams and wife Tequilla work to stock the bowtie display Tuesday. Their store, HIS Fashions, opened Wednesday
On Wednesday, a grand opening was held at HIS Fashions in Covington, bringing Thomas D. Adams’s dream to life.
“The whole concept and idea came to me in a vision when I was driving home from Atlanta,” he said. “I was just driving along, in a daze, and just trying to think of something else I could do because I was planning to quit Unilever. I looked out at the shirt I had on. I thought, ‘I bought this nice shirt in Atlanta … where can I find something like this in my community?’”
He couldn’t, so he decided to start a store where he and other men could shop instead of driving an hour to Memphis or Dyersburg.
The longtime mentor and author drew on his spirituality in naming the store.
“It actually means God, it’s HIS fashion, and that’s why it’s in all caps because it represents God.”
The store has been in the works since 2018. Adams initially planned to open in April 2019, but life and its circumstances have a way of delaying timelines.
“It all happened for a reason, 2019 just wasn’t the time. October 7 is divine timing.”
And that’s how it came to be that, in the middle of a pandemic, Adams launched a men’s clothing store.
“COVID has actually helped us. We were already planning, already trying to get things in order, and it showed me what to do rather than what not to do. The whole thing was be patient and just wait for it to kinda pass over. When it seemed like it was beginning to pass over, we knew then that it was the time to go ahead and open.”
Their mission is to provide incomparable service to the community and customers. Their slogan is “Fashioning You to Greatness.”
They’re currently offering summer closeout and fall preview items, so you can find casual and dress shirts, shorts, pants, socks, shoes, neckwear (including wooden bowties) and more, like his book “iSpeakLife.” They will transition to ladies’ clothing soon, too.
HIS Fashions is located at 102 Peeler, near Crumpy’s, in Covington. The business is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
