County hires first firefighters, vows to keep out refugees

By Jeff Ireland on January 16, 2020

Tipton County is taking a significant step toward building the first county fire department. County Executive Jeff Huffman said two county firefighters were recently hired and a third will come on board very soon, which will give the county three full-time firefighters plus Jon Piercey, who was hired as chief in 2018 when the project began. The plan is to hire six to 10 … [Read more...] about County hires first firefighters, vows to keep out refugees

Rough third quarters lead to Munford losses in district openers

By Jeff Ireland on January 15, 2020

[metaslider id=3583] The third quarter was not kind to the Munford basketball teams Tuesday night at home against Dyer County in district action. Munford's boys and girls were both very competitive through two quarters, but not so much in the third period and both teams dropped their District 13-AAA openers. Dyer County led the Lady Cougars 21-16 at the half before the Lady … [Read more...] about Rough third quarters lead to Munford losses in district openers

Q and A: Munford point guard Maiya Reed dishes on social media, culture shock and her stoic coach

By Jeff Ireland on January 13, 2020

Junior Munford point guard Maiya Reed led her team in scoring as a sophomore and is doing it again this season, averaging a county-high 20 points per game. A transplant from California, Reed is not a fan of chicken, likes social media and says her famously stoic coach smiles more than people might think. Q: When did you start playing basketball? A: I started playing when I … [Read more...] about Q and A: Munford point guard Maiya Reed dishes on social media, culture shock and her stoic coach

Atoka’s Railroad Adventure Plus was inspired by owner’s late wife

By Jeff Ireland on January 9, 2020

[metaslider id=3551] Back in 2015, Jim Brown had an idea for a business venture that would serve as entertainment for children and adults and also be a way to honor his late wife, who died two years previously. Jim and Ola used to travel together a lot. “Everywhere we went we played mini-golf,” said Brown, 86. “We’d check into a hotel, we’d have dinner and look for the nearest … [Read more...] about Atoka’s Railroad Adventure Plus was inspired by owner’s late wife

Covington routs Brighton while keeping an eye on a bigger prize

By Jeff Ireland on January 8, 2020

[metaslider id=3532] For a while Tuesday night it looked the Cardinals were going to treat the large crowd assembled in the Brighton gym to a competitive game against their county rival Covington. J.D. Weathers and Ken Hennings each hit 3-pointers to give Brighton an 8-4 lead midway through the first quarter. It was all Covington after that, though. The Chargers (13-3) went … [Read more...] about Covington routs Brighton while keeping an eye on a bigger prize

Lady Chargers surge past Brighton to finish off season sweep

By Jeff Ireland on January 8, 2020

[metaslider id=3506] Much like when the Brighton and Covington girls met on Dec. 10 in Covington, Tuesday night's game in Brighton was close for a quarter and a half. But, as they did in December, the Lady Chargers went on a run before halftime and never gave up control of the game in a 49-29 win. Sylvia "Bug" Jones scored for Brighton with 2:28 left in the second quarter to … [Read more...] about Lady Chargers surge past Brighton to finish off season sweep

A new strategy for New Year’s resolutions

By Jeff Ireland on January 7, 2020

Do you ever scoff at or make fun of something that others take part in when you actually do it yourself? I believe the word I’m looking for to describe that is hypocritical. One time I accused my wife of disagreeing with everything I said. When she denied that I, of course, disagreed with her. You know, stuff like that. A big one for me is rolling my eyes at people when they … [Read more...] about A new strategy for New Year’s resolutions

The top 10 Tipton County sports stories of the decade

By Jeff Ireland on January 3, 2020

[metaslider id=3475] This is the first time I have compiled a top 10 list for a decade and it was quite a challenge. The past 10 years have produced countless special moments, games and seasons, so picking 10 was very difficult. I tried not to let recency bias play a role, but it does seem like most of these stories happened over the past five years. Thanks to everyone who made … [Read more...] about The top 10 Tipton County sports stories of the decade
