The same day 21 people were shot and killed in a Uvalde, Texas elementary school, a Kentucky man was charged by Brighton Police with the attempted murder and possession of a firearm on school property.
James Everett Travelstead is accused of shooting at another man during a candlelight vigil at Brighton High School two months ago. According to Brighton Police Department Captain Scott Dodge, the vigil was being held for an alum who passed away. Her husband was not invited to the vigil and when Travelstead spotted him near the field house, he shot at him six or seven times with a 9 mm handgun.
Dodge estimates there were approximately 20 people still in the parking lot when the shooting took place.
His addition on the app Mobile Patrol, which publicizes booking photos and charges, caused concern for some on social media but Tipton County Schools Superintendent Dr. John Combs confirmed there was no school shooting and the vigil was not a school-sponsored function.
Travelstead was picked up Tuesday in Henderson, Ky. and transferred to Tipton County. He was also charged with possession of a firearm in the commission of a dangerous felony, reckless endangerment and tampering with evidence. His first appearance in court will be on June 14.
