Imagine having your luxury car stolen while you’re working out.
That’s what happened to one Sportsplex patron Monday night after a teenager stole keys from an area where belongings are usually placed for safe-keeping.
“He got in and stole keys from two different people, one of those sets of keys was to a Lexus,” said Covington Police Chief Larry Lindsey. “And then he stole the Lexus.”
Lindsey said the Sportsplex provided excellent surveillance video. Noticing the suspect was a teenager, patrol units worked with the high school’s school resource officer, James Robertson.
“Officer Robertson was able to identify him and knew about where he lived, so he took it upon himself to investigate.”
The stolen vehicle, and the suspect, were located. The keys were in the suspect’s bedroom.
“This was all in a three-hour period,” Lindsey added. “Again, our officers did really good work.”
The Lexus was returned to its owner without damage and the teenager was charged with theft over $10,000.
