Covington dismantles Raleigh-Egypt to set up round two showdown vs. Ripley

By The Leader on November 8, 2021

No two ways about it. No hyperbole. The Chargers deconstructed the Raleigh-Egypt Pharaohs 54-6 on Friday night in the opening round of the TSSAA Class 3A football playoffs. Raleigh-Egypt (5-5), the Region 8-3A third seed, completed just two passes for 40 yards and an interception and rushed 22 times for just 18 yards. CHS’ best defensive effort this season held them to 58 … [Read more...] about Covington dismantles Raleigh-Egypt to set up round two showdown vs. Ripley

Covington running back Jamarion Dowell named a Mr. Football semifinalist

By Jeff Ireland on November 5, 2021

Covington junior running back Jamarion Dowell received a nice honor yesterday when he was named a Class 3A Tennessee Titans Mr. Football semifinalist. He is the first Mr. Football semifinalist from Tipton County since former Covington running back Marcus Hayes was named one in 2018. Dowell has racked up 1,167 yards and 16 touchdowns on 135 carries for a Covington rushing … [Read more...] about Covington running back Jamarion Dowell named a Mr. Football semifinalist

Covington secures home playoff game with rout of Bolton

By The Leader on November 1, 2021

A cold, wet, windy night did not deter the Chargers Friday as the offense heated up and burned the Bolton Wildcats for a 55-6 region win that secured second place in the playoffs. Despite the lopsided score, the night was not all peaches and cream. Covington (7-2 overall, 4-1 Region 8-3A) seemed to be a bit off plumb all night. Jamarion Dowell put CHS on top with a 75-yard … [Read more...] about Covington secures home playoff game with rout of Bolton

Covington steamrolls Bolivar in region play

By The Leader on October 12, 2021

[metaslider id=9663] Covington’s 65-6 rout of Bolivar Central on Friday night would lead one to believe the Chargers had put up gaudy offensive numbers. Not so. CHS amassed just 253 rushing yards, well under their almost 430 yards per game average. The passing game was more productive than previous nights with 5 of 7 completions by two quarterbacks for three touchdowns. The … [Read more...] about Covington steamrolls Bolivar in region play

Week 8 football previews: Brighton, Covington, Munford will each be heavy favorites tonight

By Jeff Ireland on October 8, 2021

You can now legally gamble on college and professional football, but not high school football just yet. I doubt you'll be able to any time soon, but if there were lines on tonight's home games for Brighton, Covington and Munford, they would be very large. According to Sonny Moore's power rankings, which rank all 341 Tennessee high school football teams each week, all three … [Read more...] about Week 8 football previews: Brighton, Covington, Munford will each be heavy favorites tonight

Covington football proves once again it’s the best team in Tipton County

By Jeff Ireland on September 13, 2021

[metaslider id=9484] Twelve seconds into the second half of Friday night's Brighton-Covington showdown, the Charger coaching staff was scrambling to find some pickle juice to treat a cramping running back and head coach J.R. Kirby was firmly scolding (okay, screaming at) a player who drew a flag for getting on the field during a play. If it sounds like things were going … [Read more...] about Covington football proves once again it’s the best team in Tipton County

Brighton-Covington football preview: Something’s got to give

By Jeff Ireland on September 10, 2021

The offensive numbers surrounding Brighton and Covington, which play each other tonight in Covington, are pretty staggering. Brighton ranks first in the Shelby-Metro area in total offense (547 yards per game) and rushing offense (488) and Covington ranks second (499, 472) in both categories. Cardinal running back Braxton Sharp is first in all-purpose yards per game (332), … [Read more...] about Brighton-Covington football preview: Something’s got to give

Covington routs North Side, will not play Friday because of Millington COVID issues

By The Leader on August 31, 2021

[metaslider id=9435] “We knew that North Side had good kick returners, so we planned to kick the ball hard on the ground," said Charger head coach J.R. Kirby Friday's home opener vs. Jackson North Side. It worked better than he thought. Covington took the opening kickoff and converted two fourth downs en route to a 71-yard scoring drive capped off by Jamarion Dowell’s first … [Read more...] about Covington routs North Side, will not play Friday because of Millington COVID issues
