Opinion: Could the new plan for the Covington police station be the one that works out?

By Echo Day on February 28, 2020

This week marks three years since I toured the Covington Police Department to chronicle the working conditions inside their headquarters. In summary, it was unsafe and morale crushing. When it rained water ran down the walls inside the building. It’d caused the plaster to bubble, the ceiling tiles to bulge and covers of the fluorescent lights to brown beneath pooled … [Read more...] about Opinion: Could the new plan for the Covington police station be the one that works out?

Alderman Keith Phelps started last Thursday’s special called meeting of the public safety committee by stating the board wanted to start fresh with new plans for the proposed police station. “We’ve been talking about this for quite a number of years,” he said. “Certainly different plans have been presented and ideas presented. Covington’s new police station could be back on the table

By Echo Day on August 29, 2019

With the potential offer of a USDA grant, Covington’s city leaders are talking once again about a new police department facility. It’s a possibility that doesn’t usually exist. “I’ve been doing this for 30-something years and I’ve never seen the USDA give this much money,” said Pat Harcourt, the CEO of the architecture and engineering firm A2H. Harcourt worked with the city to … [Read more...] about Covington’s new police station could be back on the table

By Echo Day on April 25, 2018

At Tuesday night’s meeting of the Board of Mayor and Aldermen, several residents spoke out against a police station project they think is way too expensive.  “I’m all for crime fighting, but we need to spend our money wisely,” said Chris Hackett. “Our city’s in a lot of debt and our city leaders don’t know how to pay for this project, that’s scary to me.” It’s scary to business … [Read more...] about Covington residents are upset with plans about the future police station – here’s why

One year later, Covington still hasn’t decided on a location for its police department – here’s the hold up

By Echo Day on February 22, 2018

After the tied vote, Buddy Lewis didn’t mince words. “What are we to do? We want the best for our citizens in public safety. We want the very best … we get upset when we don’t think it is, but we can’t make a decision on where to build it.” A full year after the Feb. 21, 2017 vote to proceed with plans to build a new department, the city is not much closer to turning dirt than … [Read more...] about One year later, Covington still hasn’t decided on a location for its police department – here’s the hold up

Plans for Covington’s new police station may be changing – here’s why

By Echo Day on December 21, 2017

When will construction on Covington’s new police department begin? It’s a question the police chief and city leaders are frequently asked but cannot answer. This week, more bad news came after the city’s finances were considered. Working with Kay Stegall, a consultant with the Municipal Technical Advisory Service, city recorder-treasurer Tina Dunn reported building a … [Read more...] about Plans for Covington’s new police station may be changing – here’s why
