By Jeff Ireland on May 11, 2021

[metaslider id=8750] When DaNiyasia Robinson joined the Covington High School basketball team as a freshman four years ago, she's was playing mainly because she figured she should. Albert Robinson and Krystal Robinson, her uncle and aunt, were two of the best basketball players in Covington history when DaNiyasia was a toddler. Two of her cousins - Demetrius Dyson and Malcolm … [Read more...] about Covington senior DaNiyasia Robinson signs basketball scholarship with Jackson State CC

Despite early lead, Covington falls to Macon County in state quarterfinals

By Jeff Ireland on March 12, 2021

[metaslider id=8364] When Covington played Macon County two years ago in the state quarterfinals, the Lady Chargers fell behind by eight points early, never led and lost by 18. Thursday morning inside Middle Tennessee State's Murphy Center, again against Macon County in the Class AA state quarterfinals, things went drastically different in the early going. Na'Kyla Gilliam … [Read more...] about Despite early lead, Covington falls to Macon County in state quarterfinals

Postseason update: The Covington Lady Chargers are district champs again

By Jeff Ireland on March 1, 2021

The Covington Lady Chargers got a bit of a scare Thursday night at home in the District 15-AA title game, but in the end the same thing that happened in 2019 and 2020 happened: Covington won a district championship. After falling behind by three in the first quarter, Covington held Fayette-Ware to single-digit scoring in the second and third quarters and took control of the … [Read more...] about Postseason update: The Covington Lady Chargers are district champs again

Postseason update: Rosemark wins region title; Covington girls move into title game

By Jeff Ireland on February 24, 2021

Tipton-Rosemark Academy entered the DII-A West region tournament as the third seed behind top-seeded First Assembly Christian School and number two Evangelical Christian School, both of which swept the Rebels during the regular season. That didn’t seem to matter. Rosemark beat FACS 67-60 in the semifinals Monday and ECS 51-47 in the finals Tuesday to claim the region title. … [Read more...] about Postseason update: Rosemark wins region title; Covington girls move into title game

After weeklong break, district tournaments get cranked up today

By Jeff Ireland on February 22, 2021

The TSSAA basketball district tournaments were supposed to get started last week, but, as everybody is aware, they didn't. This delay, like many others, had nothing to do with COVID. As much as six inches of snow fell in West Tennessee, making travel impossible. The roads are clear now so the postseason gets started today for Tipton County and West Tennessee schools. In … [Read more...] about After weeklong break, district tournaments get cranked up today

Covington uses 3-point barrage to defeat Millington

By Jeff Ireland on January 27, 2021

[metaslider id=7721] Covington did not practice or play for 14 straight days earlier this month because of a COVID quarantine and their head coach missed Tuesday's home game vs. Millington for unrelated personal reasons, so it made perfect sense the Chargers looked out of sorts early against the Trojans. Millington jumped out to an 11-2 lead and led 14-4 after one … [Read more...] about Covington uses 3-point barrage to defeat Millington

Lady Chargers overcome slow start to stay perfect in district play

By Jeff Ireland on January 27, 2021

[metaslider id=7711] Covington's closest district game this year was a 10-point win vs. Fayette-Ware. The Lady Chargers have won the rest by 20 points or more on the way to a 7-0 league record, so it wasn't a huge surprise they looked a little lackluster in the earl going Tuesday night at home against Millington, a team they beat by 26 a month ago. Covington (17-5) … [Read more...] about Lady Chargers overcome slow start to stay perfect in district play

Emerging stars help Covington hand Brighton its first loss

By Jeff Ireland on December 9, 2020

[metaslider id=7375] Brighton entered Tuesday's showdown at home vs. Covington undefeated, but things did not start that well. Covington led by as many as 10 in the first half and took a nine-point lead into halftime. During the break Brighton head coach Stan Gatlin told his team it was not playing with poise and the speech apparently worked. The Cardinals, thanks to five … [Read more...] about Emerging stars help Covington hand Brighton its first loss
