Week 2 of high school football brings two huge rivalry games and one season opener

By Jeff Ireland on August 27, 2020

[metaslider id=6340]

Are you ready for some Thursday night football?

That’s right, Thursday.

Because weather experts are expecting the remnants of Hurricane Laura to be hitting this area tomorrow night, many West Tennessee high schools made the decision earlier this week to move their Week 2 games to tonight.

All three Tipton County teams play tonight. Tipton-Rosemark’s game vs. Middleton is still scheduled for Friday.

If you had planned on getting tickets to the Covington-Haywood or Munford-Millington game, forget about it. They are sold out. As far as I know, advanced tickets can still be purchased for the Brighton-Dyersburg game.

No tickets will be sold at the gate for any of these games and remember to wear your mask.

Here’s everything you need to know about each game:

What: Covington (1-0) vs. Haywood (0-1)

Where: Haywood High School

When: Thursday at 7 p.m.

Chargers to watch: RB Marcus Hayes, QB Carson Ruffin, LB Lareko Burton, RB Jamarion Dowell

Story lines: Haywood and Covington both had to reschedule a few weeks ago to make this game happen, and it should be a good one. Covington is ranked third in this week’s AP Class 3A state poll and Haywood is sixth in 4A … It’s hard to believe, but these natural rivals have not played since 2014. Haywood won that one 14-12 … Henry County beat Haywood last week, 27-18.

What: Brighton (1-0) vs. Dyersburg (0-0)

Where: Brighton High School

When: Thursday at 7 p.m.

Cardinals to watch: QB Nick Harvell, QB Tyler Todd, RB Wesley Ervin, TE Bryce Chaco, RB Braxton Sharp

Story lines: Nick Harvell injured his ankle early in Brighton’s Week 1 win vs. Bolivar. Coach Mike David said whether he will play or not is a game-time decision … Sophomore Tyler Todd filled in for Harvell admirably last week, throwing for 71 yards and two touchdowns … Dyersburg beat Brighton 35-21 last year and 42-7 in 2018.

What: Munford (0-1) vs. Millington (0-1)

Where: Munford High School

When: Thursday at 7 p.m.

Cougars to watch: QB Jaxon O’Neal, RB Auvic White, RB Traveon Hawkins, DB Kelton Mason, WR Ben Cerniglia

Story lines: Though Munford was beaten handily by Covington last week, the team’s new-look spread offense had its moments. Look for the Cougar offense to be crisper this week against a less stout defense … Ripley beat Millington 30-7 last week … Munford has beaten Millington five straight years, including a 12-7 victory last season.

What: Tipton-Rosemark (0-0) vs. Middleton (0-1)

Where: Middleton High School

When: Friday at 7 p.m.

Rebels to watch: QB Payne Fullen, LB Tucker James, OL Heath Harrald, TE Jalen Hurt, RB Tiger Vinson

Story lines: The Rebels passed a little more last season than they historically had and you can expect more of that Friday night. New head coach Shannon O’Brien has installed a spread offense … Jalen Hurt was moved around a lot last year, but will be a full-time wideout this year. He’s got the speed to do some damage …  These teams last played each other in 2016. TRA won, 35-14.
