PLAYOFF PREVIEW: Covington, lone local team left, plays Dyersburg tonight for semifinal berth

By Jeff Ireland on November 19, 2021

And then there was one.

As is almost always the case, Covington has outlasted the other local teams and is the only Tipton County football team still in the playoffs.

Tonight’s Class 3A quarterfinal matchup at Dyersburg figures to be a good one. Here’s a quick look at what to expect:

What: Covington (9-2) vs Dyersburg (11-0) in the Class 3A state quarterfinals

When: Today at 7 p.m.

Where: Dyersburg

Players to watch: Covington – RB Jamarion Dowell, RB Jalen Fayne, LB Christian Barbee, LB A.C. Mason; Dyersburg – RB Rah’Montaye Patton, RB Dontavis Vaughn

Storylines: Dyersburg beat Covington 29-22 in a controversial regular season game. Dyersburg missed a field goal late while trailing, but roughing the kicker was called and the Trojans scored moments later to win … Fayne rushed for 190 yards and Dowell 141 in the regular season Dyersburg game as Covington racked up 354 rushing yards … The Chargers will be looking to make the state semifinals for the fourth time in the last five seasons. Not counting last year’s season-ending COVID forfeit, the last time Covington did not make the semifinals was 2016. The team that beat them in the playoffs that year? Dyersburg.

What’s next: The winner takes a trip next Friday to Middle Tennessee to play East Nashville or White House in the state semifinals.
