Munford competing in first-ever Tennessee softball middle school state tournament

By Jeff Ireland on May 19, 2021

History will be made this weekend in Hendersonville, Tenn. and the Munford Middle School softball team will be a part of it.

For the first time in state history there will be a softball middle school state tournament.

Munford Middle School, the West Tennessee Athletic Conference regular season and tournament champs, beat Kate Bond Middle 16-0 last Monday and West Collierville Middle 12-1 last Wednesday to punch its ticket for the four-team Class AA State Tournament.

They will open play on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Drakes Creek Park vs. Siegel Middle. The winner moves on to Saturday’s 1:30 p.m. title game against Cleveland Middle or Mt. Juliet Middle. The consolation game is Saturday at 12:30 p.m.

“It’s definitely awesome, unreal,” said MMS first-year coach Mady Kate Baugus. “This group of middle school girls has exceeded our expectations all year long.”

The team’s postseason wins have come in dramatic fashion. Vivian Millican hit a walk-off homer in the win over West Collierville and Isabel Henderson hit one in the conference tournament.

West Collierville lost just two games all season and both of them were to Munford Middle, which is 19-1 on the season.

On Friday at 9 a.m. there will be a send-off for the team. A police-escorted caravan will start at Munford Elementary and proceed to Munford High and Munford Middle. The community is invited to attend.

“We’ve talked all year about mental toughness, grit and passion,” Baugus said. “The girls of blown our minds as to what they’re capable of doing. They’re something special.”
