Munford, Brighton, TRA send athletes to Spring Fling this week

By The Leader on May 22, 2023

Numerous Tipton County teams will be in action at the Spring Fling state championship this week in Murfreesboro.

Munford softball and Brighton baseball will begin on Tuesday afternoon. Tipton-Rosemark begins Wednesday morning.

Several track athletes from across the county will be in action as well.

This will be Brighton’s second appearance in three years. They made it to their first baseball state tournament in school history in 2021.

Munford returns to Murfreesboro after a nine-year hiatus. The Lady Cougars have yet to capture a title.

TRA softball will make their third straight appearance and ninth overall. They won it all in 2011 and 2014.

Brighton (27-7) will start with Greenville (32-3) at Smyrna High School at 6:30 p.m. Class 3A bracket can be found here.

Munford (19-9) faces defending champion Lexington (26-13-1) at 4:00 p.m. at the Murfreesboro Sports Complex. Bracket for softball 3A can be found here.

TRA (24-14-1) plays Chattanooga Christian (21-12-1) Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. in the Division II-AA tournament. Bracket found here.

How they got there:

Brighton

After winning the district and region championship against Munford, the Cardinals dismantled Fayette Ware in a new best-of-three series that was implemented this season. It was a clean sweep with both games having a combined score of 27-2.

Munford

Lexi Billings’s dominant performance led the Lady Cougars over Millington 4-0 in sectionals. The senior pitcher threw a no-hitter with 12 strikeouts and went 3-for-3 in the battling box with a home run to add.

TRA

After wins over St. Benedict and Briarcrest, TRA hosted Brentwood Academy in a series. They only needed two games to advance with game one being cut short due to rain but they won 8-3 in five innings.

Brooke Harrison had three hits with two RBIs. Lanie Howie struck out six batters.

In game two, Howie and Harrison scattered three hits apiece.
