Years ago, Donnie Kelley decided that Munford Football should honor Johnnie Jones by hosting a golf scramble in his name.

The Johnnie Jones Classic Presented by Covington Family Dental will be held Saturday, May 20 at Forest Hill Golf Course in Drummonds. Registration is at 7 a.m. and four-person scramble play begins at 8 a.m. You can register here.

“Of course it’s an opportunity to raise some money for the program, but the main thing is to honor Johnnie,” Kelley said. “Johnnie has done so many great things for us.”

Jones rushed for 4,547 yards and 47 touchdowns during his time as a running back at Munford and emerged as a Heisman Trophy candidate at the University of Tennessee, where he rushed for 2,852 yards, a school record at the time. He was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks and later played in the Canadian Football League.

When his playing days were over he came back to Munford and has been a school resource officer and assistant football coach.

“He’s always giving, giving, giving,” Kelley said. “This is a chance to turn this into something special and have a lot of fun.”

There will be prizes for longest drive, longest putt and closest to the pin as well as gift bags, free lunch and a visor.
