Covington’s boys and girls take out Bolivar to remain perfect in district play

By The Leader on February 7, 2020

The Covington Chargers, ranked sixth in this week’s Class AA poll, continued their hot play with an 86-64 home win over the Bolivar Tigers on Tuesday night that improved their record to 22-3 overall and 9-0 in District 15-AA play.

The teams played to a draw in the first half, heading to the locker-room tied at 32. Whatever coach Charles Mitchell said at the break sunk in.

Covington, which has now won 11 straight, came out guns blazing, outscoring Bolivar 25-17 in the third period before blowing it open in the fourth with a 28-17 outburst.

Prominent in the win was the play of forward Brandon Alston, who had a double-double, scoring a team-high 25 points while nabbing 13 rebounds. He also blocked five shots, had four steals, three assists and just one turnover.

Travontae Powell turned in a 20-point performance. Martez Logan was in double figures with 10 points and Myles Stark had nine.

In girls’ action, Covington jumped out to a 27-0 lead after one quarter and beat Bolivar 55-21 for its fifth straight win.

The Lady Chargers (21-4, 9-0) were led by DaNiyasia Robinson, Trinity Taylor and Felia Fayne, each of whom scored 14 points.

Covington hosts Fayette-Ware tonight and closes the home season with Bolton on Feb. 11. The regular season comes to a close at Ripley on Feb. 14. District tournament play begins Feb. 17 at Bolivar.
