After nearly six years as the city’s top cop, Covington Police Chief Buddy Lewis will resign this summer.
Announced during Tuesday’s meeting of the board of mayor and aldermen, his resignation will take place no later than Sept. 1, the letter states.
“The decision to move on to the next chapter of my life comes after much prayer and discussion with my family,” Lewis said. “My next chapter may include another opportunity to service, however I look forward to spending as much time as possible with my family and new twin granddaughters.”
Lewis, who has served as chief since October 2013, has previously served as a deputy sheriff, state trooper and the sheriff of Tipton County.
Hanson has contacted the state’s municipal technical advisory service, as he has in the past, to assist with replacing the department head.
In addition to police chief, the city is in the process of hiring a new fire chief and city judge.
After an indictment in March, the fire chief resigned in April.
Judge Beth Ziarko, planning to retire, resigned late last month.
Hanson congratulated Lewis on what he called a stellar career in law enforcement.
The city will honor Lewis before he ends his employment.
The job, which is expected to be posted in the coming weeks, will be open for a month.
