Brighton, Covington, Munford battling for district supremacy

By Jeff Ireland on April 20, 2022

After the softball games that took place over the past seven days between Brighton, Covington and Munford, the District 14-AAA tournament should be interesting.

Munford handed Brighton its first district loss of the season on Tuesday. Last Thursday, Covington got some revenge against Munford with a dramatic 2-1 win.

Brighton still has the inside track to the regular season title, but the district tournament, out of which only two teams advance, appears to be wide open.

Brighton routed Munford earlier this season, but Tuesday’s game in Brighton was a totally different story. In addition to going 2 for 4 at the plate, Lexi Billings struck out nine, walked none and allowed just four hits and one earned run to lead Munford to a 6-1 win.

The Lady Cardinals led 1-0 until Munford scored four runs in the top of the fifth to take control of the game. Lacie Hummelstine led Munford’s attack, going 4 for 4 with a double. Katelyn Daugherty drove in three runs and Jordan Wilson and Shelby Kendrick each had two hits.

Kesley Camp, Carley Cook, Adin Shelton and Maddie Perkins each had one hit for Brighton. Katelyn Jones struck out two and allowed 12 hits.

Thursday night in Covington, Anna Reese Cousar was the hero. With the scored tied 1-1 in the bottom of the seventh, she came up with a walk-off single to give her team a dramatic 2-1 victory over Munford.

Ana Gover and Anna Grace Godwin each doubled for Covington and Godwin had two hits and an RBI. Gover struck out four over 6.1 innings and Charleigh Cole finished the game off to get the victory.

Chloe Lowry singled and doubled for Munford and Billings drove in Munford’s lone run. Billings struck out five and allowed six hits over six innings to take the loss.
