Brighton-Covington football preview: Something’s got to give

The offensive numbers surrounding Brighton and Covington, which play each other tonight in Covington, are pretty staggering.

Brighton ranks first in the Shelby-Metro area in total offense (547 yards per game) and rushing offense (488) and Covington ranks second (499, 472) in both categories.

Cardinal running back Braxton Sharp is first in all-purpose yards per game (332), rushing yards per game (272.5) and touchdowns (7). Covington’s Jamarion Dowell is third in rushing yards per game (197.5) and total yard (395).

Doing a little math, that means if these numbers hold there will be 1,046 yards of offense produced tonight. I think we all know that’s not going to happen.

Something’s got to give and it will be interesting to see which offense slows down.

Here’s a quick preview of that game, plus the Munford and Tipton-Rosemark games:

WEEK 4 PREVIEWS

What: Brighton (3-0) vs. Covington (3-0)

Where: Covington

When: Friday at 7

Players to watch: Brighton – QB Nick Harvell, RB Braxton Sharp, DL Jacob Rodriquez, DB Kolby Jones; Covington – RB Jalen Fayne, RB Jamarion Dowell, DB A.C. Mason, LB Christian Barbee

One thing to know: Covington has beaten Brighton four straight seasons, including a 42-0 rout last season.

What: Dyersburg (3-0) vs. Munford (2-1)

Where: Munford

When: Friday night at 7

Players to watch: Munford – RB Auvic White, QB Jordan Bell, WR Icarius Hodgin, LB Ben Cerniglia

One thing to know: While Dyersburg is undefeated, one win was via forfeit and other was against an overmatched King Prep team. The Trojans beat Dyer County 53-7 in Week 2.

What: Tipton-Rosemark (1-2) vs. Macon Road Baptist (1-1)

Where: Rosemark

When: Friday at 7 p.m.

Players to watch: Rosemark – QB Payne Fullen, OL Gibson Phillips, WR Sam Cannon, WR Tyler Byrd

One thing to know: Macon Road’s lone win came in Week 1 vs. the Memphis Nighthawk, a home school program.
