Brighton baseball ends Munford’s season, advances to todays’s district title game

By Jeff Ireland on May 11, 2021

The ramifications of Monday’s Brighton-Munford baseball district tournament game in Savannah were simple: The winner would move on to the title game and qualify for the region tournament and the season was over for the loser.

After a half inning it was pretty clear how things were going to go.

Five of the first six Brighton batters reached in the top of the first as the Cardinals scored eight runs en route to a 13-1 win, ending Munford’s season at 17-16.

Luke Perkins singled in two and Ben Lavelle drove in two with a double in the first to make the score 4-0. After Luke Olivette singled in the fifth run Kaleb Baskin drove in three with a bases-loaded double to all but put the game out of reach.

Jake Buchanan was dominant on the mound for Brighton, allowing just one hit and striking out six in five innings for the complete-game win.

Brighton (20-13) will play Hardin County today at 5 p.m. in Savannah. Hardin County wins the district title with a win. If Brighton wins the two teams play again at 7:30 p.m. for the title.

The Cardinals added five runs in the fourth inning and game was stopped after five innings via the mercy rule.

Andrew Davis and Lavelle each had two hits for Brighton and Logan Rushing had a two-RBI double.

A one-out single in the bottom of the first by Chris Swords was Munford’s only hit.
