Robert Luttrell steps down after seven seasons as Dyersburg State girls’ soccer coach

By Jeff Ireland on July 16, 2025

Seven years ago, Dyersburg State Community College decided to start a women’s soccer program and they chose Robert Luttrell to be the head coach.

That ended up being a very good decision.

After 21 all-conference players, three freshmen of the year, a field built on the Covington campus, one MVP, an appearance in the conference title game and a coach of the year award, the program is in a good place heading into the future.

Luttrell announced last week he was stepping down from his position at DSCC.

“We did accomplish some amazing things,” said Luttrell, a longtime teacher at CHS who will coach the boys’ and girls’ soccer teams at Covington High School this upcoming year. “We maintained a team GPA average of 3.0-3.5 during this tenure.  We graduated so many players with their associate’s degrees and 11 players that were able to continue to play at other universities after us.  We had about two players per season that would go onto to play somewhere else, including one that won a national title. We would’ve sent more, but a lot of them just graduated with their degree and were able to start their careers. We would set a record and then break that record the next year. It was tough for me to leave because it was getting easier, more and more players were reaching out to me to play at our program. I truly enjoyed it, it was extremely challenging being the first, but I got to meet so many incredible people that I would’ve never known.”

During Luttrell’s tenure, there were eight all-academic players (3.5 GPA or higher), something that was a point of emphasis for Luttrell, whose been an educator for 25 years.

“I’m going to miss the players the most.  Such incredible human beings have come through this program and they make the sport better by being in it.  I am going to miss it and loved being their coach. Thank you for everything Dyersburg State, and I wish you only the best for the future.”
