Munford High School closed Thursday after teacher found deceased

By The Leader on March 6, 2025

Munford High School was closed for the day following an emergency situation early Thursday morning, according to a statement released by the Munford Police Department and Tipton County Schools.

Authorities responded to the school before the start of the school day, where they discovered a staff member deceased on the premises. No students were present at the time, and police have assured the community that there is no ongoing threat.

“The situation has been contained, and all students and staff are safe,” said Munford Police Chief Randal Baskin in an official statement. “The school will remain closed for the day while our officers continue their investigation.”

The teacher was later identified as Samuel “Colin” Day, a special education teacher. Baskin said Day died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

“We appreciate the cooperation of the school staff and first responders in ensuring the safety of our students,” said Baskin. “Parents and guardians will receive further updates from the school district regarding any next steps.”

Tipton County Schools Assistant Superintendent/Director of Schools Dr. Rebekah Byrd issued a statement on behalf of the school board.

“As we mourn the tragic loss of a highly respected and valued member of our school family today, we offer prayers and condolences to Mr. Day’s loved ones, his friends, and the entire staff and student body of Munford High School. We want to thank the Munford police and fire departments, EMA Director Baker McCool, ServiceMaster by Cornerstone, and local officials who worked this morning to assist school and district personnel during the emergency that unfolded.”

An announcement concerning the status of school at Munford High tomorrow is forthcoming.

Anyone with questions or concerns is encouraged to contact the Munford Police Department.
