On Friday the videos began spreading through Munford Elementary’s social circles: A man, dressed in a turkey costume and wearing skates, dances to a festive Thanksgiving song while kindergarteners try to keep up.

The stunt marked the end of fundraising and celebrated raising enough money to purchase additional playground equipment.

“We were just happy to raise $1,000,” said bookkeeper Linda McKinley. “We started a Turkey Trot and a teacher from each grade level had a turkey.”

The school raised funds by selling feathers for the turkeys for $1 each.

The winning grade level would win a party, its teacher being required to don a turkey costume and gobble all day.

“We decided if Coach Lowery won, the whole school would get a party.”

Lowery, indeed, won. And he took the turkey costume a step further with the skates.

“It was pretty cool, the kids loved it,” McKinley said. “Everywhere he went you could hear the kids erupting with laughter. The roller skates made it even funnier. It was just awesome.”

The students brought pillows and blankets to school and ate popcorn while watching Toy Story 4.

The school raised $3,744 through the fundraiser, nearly quadrupling the initial goal.

The MES PTO would like to raise a total of $4,500 for the equipment. Anyone wishing to donate is asked to contact mespto18@gmail.com.
