In district/county rival games, anything can happen.
Take the Munford vs. Covington matchup on Tuesday night, when the Chargers scraped their way out with a 4-3 win.
“I think we’ve been a late-inning team all year, and, you know, you would like to come out and score runs early, but these girls have a flare for the dramatic,” said Tucker Taylor, who served as interim head coach.
Lexi Billings smoked a double to score two runs on the board early and remained the only scores throughout the game until the seventh.
Defense played a huge role for Munford behind Billings’ ten strikeouts, and Covington’s field kept the Cougars from scoring through five innings.
Natalee Faulkner broke the drought with a home run on top of the seventh, but Covington responded next at-bat.
They went on to score four runs and Kinley Escue sealed it with a hard ball flying out to right field.
Escue finished with two hits. Faulkner went 3-for-3.
“We know that we can score runs in bunches when we need to, and when they happened late game, we just try to settle everybody down and tell them to get out of the inning with no more damage and they did that,” Taylor explained.
Covington’s record hasn’t reflected the effort they put in during district play and they will enter postseason with high confidence.
“We’re just as good as anybody in this district if we believe that,” Taylor added.
