By Jeff Ireland on November 1, 2023

Both the girls and boys cross country teams from Covington are headed to state following an impressive showing at the regional meet at Shelby Farms last week. Leading the girls’ team was Kinlee Carver, … [Read more...] about Brighton, Covington sending runners to cross country state meet

Covington routs Liberty Tech to solidify playoff position

By The Leader on October 10, 2023

Normally they turn out the lights when the game is over. It took nearly 40 minutes to get all the lights on at Liberty Tech on Friday night. Once they did come on, the Crusaders (0-7, 0-4 Region) likely wished for a power failure. There was no lack of power for the Chargers (6-2, 4-1 Region), who scored 10 touchdowns en route to a 70-12 Region 7-3A victory. The point total … [Read more...] about Covington routs Liberty Tech to solidify playoff position

By Jeff Ireland on October 10, 2023

[metaslider id=12792] Things could not have gone much better for the Cardinals through one quarter of their matchup Friday night at Munford. Brighton found the end zone on two of its first three possessions and, a year after getting run of the field by its bitter rival, found itself ahead 14-13. But multiple turnovers and special teams miscues by Brighton, not to mention a … [Read more...] about Munford defeats Brighton in game decided by turnovers, special teams miscues

Chargers pick up dramatic win vs. Fairley in Memphis

By The Leader on September 25, 2023

“Press the kicking game. Here is where the breaks are made.” - Gen. Robert R. Neyland, game maxim No. 6 For all of the big plays that happened in Covington’s 42-38 win over Fairley on Friday at J.P. Freeman Stadium in Memphis, none may have been more important than Fairley's five failed two-point conversion attempts. Fairley (4-2) matched CHS touchdown for touchdown, six … [Read more...] about Chargers pick up dramatic win vs. Fairley in Memphis

The TRA Rebels are 3-0 after defeating South Fulton

By Jeff Ireland on September 5, 2023

Last season did not start well for the Tipton-Rosemark Academy football team. There’s really no debating that. The Rebels lost their first six games. They still managed to make the playoffs, but the early season stumbles affected the team’s morale. That hasn’t been a problem this season. After the Rebels beat South Fulton 21-14 on the road Friday night, TRA is 3-0 for the first … [Read more...] about The TRA Rebels are 3-0 after defeating South Fulton

Brighton routs Ridgeway for first win of the season

By Jeff Ireland on September 5, 2023

The temperature was in the low 80s when Brighton finished off an impressive 42-6 home win versus Ridgeway Friday night, so it was pretty toasty. Still, when a pair of Brighton players dumped a jug of ice water on first-year head coach Keith Setler, he wasn't exactly refreshed. "That was so cold," Setler said with a laugh. "It's been a while since I was doused like that. It … [Read more...] about Brighton routs Ridgeway for first win of the season

It was much closer this time, but Covington beat Brighton in a closely-contested game

By Jeff Ireland on August 28, 2023

[metaslider id=12656] Entering Friday night's game between county rivals Covington and Brighton, the Chargers had beaten the Cardinals six straight times, and none of them were close. The combined score of those six games: Covington 280, Brighton 65. Covington won last year's game 49-6. From the outset of Friday's game in Covington, it was clear this game was going to be … [Read more...] about It was much closer this time, but Covington beat Brighton in a closely-contested game
