Postseason update: Covington baseball puts Brighton and Munford on the brink

By Jeff Ireland on May 9, 2022

A little more than a month ago, the Covington baseball team was 3-9 and on a seven-game losing streak. That seems like ancient history now. Covington beat top-seeded Munford and Brighton over the weekend in the District 14-AAA tournament to clinch a spot in Tuesday's title game. Covington also secured a spot in next week's region tournament. Munford and Brighton play today … [Read more...] about Postseason update: Covington baseball puts Brighton and Munford on the brink

Brighton, Munford baseball split two as district schedule winds down

By Jeff Ireland on April 20, 2022

Munford had a chance sew up the number one seed in next month's district tournament with a two-game sweep of Brighton. It didn't happen, though. Brighton won the first game Monday and Munford won game two on Tuesday. That means Munford (18-7 overall, 6-2 District 14-AAA) and Brighton (11-11, 4-2) would finish tied atop the regular season standings if Brighton beats Covington … [Read more...] about Brighton, Munford baseball split two as district schedule winds down

Munford baseball sweeps Covington in new district

By The Leader on March 31, 2022

[metaslider id=10339] Covington and Munford’s baseball parking lots were more packed than usual for their annual matchups Monday and Tuesday. The attendance equaled the size of a sub-state game, but the postseason has not begun. Why? History was being made as the two schools collided in district games, which is a first time both teams are competing in the District 14-AAA, so … [Read more...] about Munford baseball sweeps Covington in new district

Covington first baseman Chris Godwin signs with Jackson State Community College

By Jeff Ireland on February 18, 2022

Covington senior Chris Godwin had perhaps the biggest hit of the season last year for the Chargers. With a state tournament berth on the line in a sectional game at South Gibson, Godwin hit a solo homer in the top of the ninth to give the Chargers a 5-4 win and another state tournament berth. As chance would have it, Jacob Bryant, a second baseman for South Gibson, and Godwin … [Read more...] about Covington first baseman Chris Godwin signs with Jackson State Community College

By Jeff Ireland on February 9, 2022

Jordan Massey, a hard-throwing right-handed pitcher at Tipton-Rosemark Academy, signed a baseball scholarship Tuesday afternoon with Southwest Tennessee Community College. A question always asked of students when they sign an athletic scholarship: Why did you choose this school? The fact that all five of Massey's siblings - three brothers and two sisters - and his parents … [Read more...] about Rosemark pitcher Jordan Massey signs with Southwest Tennessee Community College

Covington High teacher Taylor Wilson publishes inspirational book about son Landon Wilson

By Jeff Ireland on January 4, 2022

On Oct. 26, 2017, Taylor Wilson was making spaghetti for dinner. That food ended up on the stove for weeks and is a dish Wilson can't fathom eating again. As dusk fell that day, Landon Wilson, Taylor's 18-year-old son, went on a run from his Haywood County home. At 6-6 and about 210 pounds, Taylor was a promising right-handed senior pitcher for the Haywood High Tomcats. He had … [Read more...] about Covington High teacher Taylor Wilson publishes inspirational book about son Landon Wilson

Top 10 Tipton County sports stories of the year

By Jeff Ireland on December 30, 2021

[metaslider id=9980] The year that was 2021, at least when it comes to sports, was much better than 2020. COVID-19 cancelled all spring sports in 2020 and had a major impact on football as well. There was still some issues here and there as far as COVID, but by and large seasons went off without a hitch and Tipton County-area teams found their fair share of success. Here are … [Read more...] about Top 10 Tipton County sports stories of the year
