Covington dismantles Raleigh-Egypt to set up round two showdown vs. Ripley

By The Leader on November 8, 2021

No two ways about it. No hyperbole. The Chargers deconstructed the Raleigh-Egypt Pharaohs 54-6 on Friday night in the opening round of the TSSAA Class 3A football playoffs. Raleigh-Egypt (5-5), the Region 8-3A third seed, completed just two passes for 40 yards and an interception and rushed 22 times for just 18 yards. CHS’ best defensive effort this season held them to 58 … [Read more...] about Covington dismantles Raleigh-Egypt to set up round two showdown vs. Ripley

Covington secures home playoff game with rout of Bolton

By The Leader on November 1, 2021

A cold, wet, windy night did not deter the Chargers Friday as the offense heated up and burned the Bolton Wildcats for a 55-6 region win that secured second place in the playoffs. Despite the lopsided score, the night was not all peaches and cream. Covington (7-2 overall, 4-1 Region 8-3A) seemed to be a bit off plumb all night. Jamarion Dowell put CHS on top with a 75-yard … [Read more...] about Covington secures home playoff game with rout of Bolton

Munford overwhelms Kingsbury to set up huge game Friday vs. Central

By The Leader on October 26, 2021

It could’ve been considered a “trap" or a “throw-away” game. The outcome of Munford hosting Kingsbury Friday night would have no effect on the Cougars’ postseason future. Win or lose they would face Central in the final week of the regular season to determine their seeding in the playoffs. So, you would forgive them if they didn’t take this game seriously. They didn’t see it … [Read more...] about Munford overwhelms Kingsbury to set up huge game Friday vs. Central

Haywood hands Covington its first shutout in 12 years

By The Leader on October 26, 2021

Pop quiz: When was the last time the Covington Chargers were shut out in a football game? Answer: In the eighth game of the 2009 season when Haywood beat Covington 21-0. That 13-year streak ended Friday night and the opponent was the same. The Haywood Tomcats (9-0, ranked fourth in the state in Class 4A) completely stymied the Chargers 33-0 in a non-region game in … [Read more...] about Haywood hands Covington its first shutout in 12 years

Burlison teenager Stevi Owen has a passion for learning history and genealogy

By The Leader on October 19, 2021

Genealogy is the second-fastest growing hobby throughout the world, with gardening ranking first, but even with its popularity it’s rare to find young adults who consider themselves a genealogist. That is, unless you’re Stevilyn Owen of Burlison. The precocious 13-year-old is a promising genealogist thru and thru. Her mother, Laurel Hamilton Owen, calls her an “old … [Read more...] about Burlison teenager Stevi Owen has a passion for learning history and genealogy

Covington steamrolls Bolivar in region play

By The Leader on October 12, 2021

[metaslider id=9663] Covington’s 65-6 rout of Bolivar Central on Friday night would lead one to believe the Chargers had put up gaudy offensive numbers. Not so. CHS amassed just 253 rushing yards, well under their almost 430 yards per game average. The passing game was more productive than previous nights with 5 of 7 completions by two quarterbacks for three touchdowns. The … [Read more...] about Covington steamrolls Bolivar in region play

Munford destroys Southwind as showdown with Central looms

By The Leader on October 11, 2021

Munford remained perfect in region play on Friday as the Cougars put together what may have been their most complete game yet. Penalties were kept to a minimum while the offense more than 200 yards on the ground and the defense managed to get three interceptions on the way to a 44-14 rout of Southwind. Munford improves to 6-2 overall and 4-0 in region play, steamrolling … [Read more...] about Munford destroys Southwind as showdown with Central looms
