Munford High sending six wrestlers to state meet next week

By Jeff Ireland on February 15, 2021

The last two years Munford High School established itself as having one of the best wrestling programs in West Tennessee, sending 13 wrestlers to state during that time span. That trend is continuing this year. Six Munford wrestlers finished second in the region meet Feb. 10 at Bartlett High School and all six are headed to the Class AAA state meet Feb. 24-26 in Franklin. … [Read more...] about Munford High sending six wrestlers to state meet next week

Covington’s Macauley Jones signs soccer scholarship with Dyersburg State

By Jeff Ireland on February 6, 2021

[metaslider id=7874] Covington High soccer coach Rusty Richardson wasn't sure what to think when Macauley Jones approached him last July about playing soccer. Jones had never play organized soccer in her life, but Richardson knew she was an athlete. As a freshman at Brighton in 2018, Jones and Andi Coulston advanced to the state tennis tournament in doubles. "I knew I didn't … [Read more...] about Covington’s Macauley Jones signs soccer scholarship with Dyersburg State

Standout Covington lineman Reed Chipman signs with Bethel University

By Jeff Ireland on February 5, 2021

[metaslider id=7859] Reed Chipman was a starting lineman on the undefeated Covington freshman football team in 2017 and the high school coaching staff was excited to get him on the varsity squad the following fall. Except Chipman decided football wasn't for him. "At the time I lost a spark for the sport," Chipman said. "I didn't think it was something I was going to … [Read more...] about Standout Covington lineman Reed Chipman signs with Bethel University

The world could certainly use more men like Jimmy Glover

By Jeff Ireland on February 4, 2021

For the better part of 20 years, Jimmy Glover used to send me handwritten letters on notebook paper every few weeks or so during boxing season. The first time I got one I was 24 years old, fresh out of college and navigating my first job in journalism. It was written in cursive and when somebody put it on my desk I recall saying something like “What in the world is this? I … [Read more...] about The world could certainly use more men like Jimmy Glover

Munford’s Jordan Moore signs volleyball scholarship with Walters State

By Jeff Ireland on February 4, 2021

[metaslider id=7846] When Munford senior Jordan Moore was in middle school and doing a little channel surfing, she came across beach volleyball. “I saw it and said, ‘That’s amazing. I want to try that,’” Moore said. “I asked my mom about it and she made it happen. She’s always been my number one supporter ... That got me right to where I am now and I’m just very grateful … [Read more...] about Munford’s Jordan Moore signs volleyball scholarship with Walters State

Munford finishes off sweep of Brighton to inch closer to district title

By Jeff Ireland on February 3, 2021

[metaslider id=7831] There seemed to be a lot of uncertainty surrounding the Munford boys' basketball team as the 2020-21 season began. Nic Buford was beginning his first season as a high school boys' head coach. Last year's team won just nine games and the top two scorers from that team graduated. Just two starters were returning and there were only three players on the … [Read more...] about Munford finishes off sweep of Brighton to inch closer to district title

Lady Cougars take care of Brighton, will finish second or third in district

By Jeff Ireland on February 3, 2021

[metaslider id=7823] The Brighton-Munford girls' game Tuesday night in Brighton was pretty much a carbon copy of the game the teams played against one another two weeks ago in Munford. A Brighton team missing multiple starters struggled to score and handle Munford's pressure defense. The result was a 49-6 district win for Munford. The Lady Cougars started the game on an 11-0 … [Read more...] about Lady Cougars take care of Brighton, will finish second or third in district

Covington uses 3-point barrage to defeat Millington

By Jeff Ireland on January 27, 2021

[metaslider id=7721] Covington did not practice or play for 14 straight days earlier this month because of a COVID quarantine and their head coach missed Tuesday's home game vs. Millington for unrelated personal reasons, so it made perfect sense the Chargers looked out of sorts early against the Trojans. Millington jumped out to an 11-2 lead and led 14-4 after one … [Read more...] about Covington uses 3-point barrage to defeat Millington
