Tipton-Rosemark senior Ali Naumann signs softball scholarship with Dyersburg State

By Jeff Ireland on April 29, 2021

When Ali Naumann was a freshman softball player at Tipton-Rosemark four years ago, she collided with the University School of Jackson catcher so hard while trying to score that the opposing player was left unconscious. It was at the point that head coach Johnie Sanfratello began to realize what kind of player he had on his hands. Before Naumann signed her scholarship with … [Read more...] about Tipton-Rosemark senior Ali Naumann signs softball scholarship with Dyersburg State

Braylen Rudd gets a knockout as Covington Boxing Club returns to action

By Jeff Ireland on April 28, 2021

It’s been a pretty difficult last 12 months or so for the Covington Boxing Club. COVID shut things down last year. Then, two months ago, coach Jimmy Glover, who founded the club nearly 50 years ago, died. The boxers began working out again last September, but the pandemic was preventing clubs from hosting boxing shows. Finally, last Saturday night in Pine Bluff, Ark., … [Read more...] about Braylen Rudd gets a knockout as Covington Boxing Club returns to action

David Stevens will replace Barry Trobaugh as Munford band’s director

By Jeff Ireland on April 27, 2021

When David Stevens was a member of the Munford High band in the mid-2000s, he talked to Barry Trobaugh about his goal of one day becoming Munford's band director. "He tried to talk me out of it," Stevens said with a laugh. "I think it was kind of a test." Apparently he passed it with flying colors. Munford principal Dr. Courtney Fee announced last Friday that Stevens, a 2006 … [Read more...] about David Stevens will replace Barry Trobaugh as Munford band’s director

Baseball roundup: Munford, Covington pick up district sweeps

By Jeff Ireland on April 21, 2021

The Munford and Covington baseball teams swept two-game district sets Monday and Tuesday to stay at the top of their league standings. Munford (14-10 overall, 5-1 District 13-AAA) got complete-game shutouts from Chase Spears and Garrett McKinney to beat Dyer County on consecutive days. A week after pitching a no-hitter vs. Brighton, McKinney hurled a one-hitter Monday at home … [Read more...] about Baseball roundup: Munford, Covington pick up district sweeps

Barry Trobaugh retiring after wildly successful 27-year run as Munford’s band director

By Jeff Ireland on April 20, 2021

If you have any plans to walk down a Munford High School hallway with Barry Trobaugh, be prepared to walk really, really fast. On the way to the library from the main office on a recent Monday morning, he left a trailing reporter in his dust. “He’s always on a mission,” John Lombardo, a former Munford band member who later served as one of his assistants, said with a laugh. “He … [Read more...] about Barry Trobaugh retiring after wildly successful 27-year run as Munford’s band director

Brighton softball finishes off doubleheader sweep on Brie Howard’s walk-off homer

By Jeff Ireland on April 16, 2021

It would be hard to dream up a more dramatic way to sweep a key district doubleheader than the way the Brighton softball team did it Thursday night in Savannah. After beating Hardin County 4-3 in eight innings in game one, sophomore Brie Howard, one of the hottest hitters around, hit a walk-off three-run homer to give Brighton a wildly entertaining 6-4 win. Brighton (11-4 … [Read more...] about Brighton softball finishes off doubleheader sweep on Brie Howard’s walk-off homer

Dominant pitching by Rushing leads Brighton past Munford

By Jeff Ireland on April 14, 2021

[metaslider id=8604] Individual pitching performances were clearly the story in Brighton-Munford district games Monday and Tuesday. A day after Munford's Garrett McKinney no-hit the Cardinals, Brighton lefty Logan Rushing hurled a dominant one-hitter Tuesday in Brighton to lead the Cardinals to a 4-0 win. Rushing struck out 10, including seven of eight to start the game, and … [Read more...] about Dominant pitching by Rushing leads Brighton past Munford
