Playoff preview: A look at what Covington and Munford will be facing tonight

By Jeff Ireland on November 12, 2021

Getting to the state quarterfinals is really hard for most programs.

Munford, which has been a pretty successful program historically, hasn’t been to the quarterfinals in 24 years. The Cougars can break that streak tonight with a win over Henry County.

Covington is not like most programs. If the Chargers can get past Ripley tonight, they will make the quarterfinals for the 15th time since 1997. That means Covington gets to the state quarterfinals more often than they don’t. Pretty impressive.

Here’s a quick look at the two Tipton County playoff games:

What: Covington (8-2) vs. Ripley (5-6) in round two of Class 3A state playoffs

Where: Covington

When: Friday at 7 p.m.

Players to watch: Covington – RB Jamarion Dowell, RB Jalen Fayne, LB A.C. Mason, LB Christian Barbee

Storylines: Covington and Ripley played each other on Sept. 17 and Covington won a very competitive game, 30-20 … Omarion Pitts is Ripley’s best offensive weapon. The sophomore running back has 1,162 yards and 19 touchdowns in seven games … According to Sonny Moore’s computer rankings, Covington is a 25-point favorite.

What’s next: The winner plays Dyersburg or Millington in the quarterfinals.

What: Munford (9-2) vs. Henry County (6-5) in round two of Class 5A state playoffs

Where: Munford

When: Friday at 7 p.m.

Players to watch: Munford – RB Auvic White, QB Jordan Bell, RB Jace Hodgin, DB Icarius Hodgin

Storylines: History is not on Munford’s side. Munford has played Henry County in the playoffs five times since 2011. The Cougars lost all five by an average score of 37-10 … Auvic White has been a beast all year, but has really stepped it up of late. He’s averaging 183 rushing yards per game over the past four games … According to Sonny Moore’s computer rankings, Henry County is an eight-point favorite.

What’s next: The winner players Memphis Central or Springfield in the quarterfinals.
