Ryan Coley and Katelyn Varnadore lead local runners at state cross country meet

Eighteen runners from Tipton County high schools took part in the state cross country meet last Thursday at Sanders Ferry Park in Hendersonville and several fared very well.

Munford sophomore Ryan Coley was the local high finisher, running a 17:19 to finish 65th in a field of 194.

Covington sophomore San’Darius Coleman took 88th with a time of 17:34 and Charger junior Jaylen Denmark ran a 17:50 to finish 107th.

The Covington boys qualified for the meet as a team and finished 19th among 24 teams. Other Charger finishers were Dalton Travis (144th, 18:26), Owen Griffin (164th, 19:27), Cayden Griffin (168th, 19:31), James Evan Roane (184th, 20:38) and Caden Owen (20:40).

Brighton’s girls qualified as a team and finished 22nd among 24 teams.

Lady Cardinal senior Katelyn Varnadore led all Tipton County girls with a time of 21:57, which was good enough for 111th out of 190 runners.

Other Brighton finishers were Bree Howard (116th, 22:09), Hailey Landers (144th, 23:15), Makenzie Winnans (162nd, 24:17), Karsen Waddell (179th, 25:43), Kamryn Bridges (183rd, 26:17) and Presley Smith (184th, 26:22).

Two Covington runners – Ma’liyah Gilliam and Tia Crider – competed. Gilliam ran a 22:44 to finish 131st and Crider posted a 23:51 for 156th place.

Munford’s Averie Yeager ran a 22:50 to finish 136th.
