Drummonds resident Mary Julia Proctor has been a woman who gets things done for a long time.
She became the first female member of the Tipton County Commission in 1978 and has been active n the community for the better part of five decades.
Her latest project is as president of AT&T Life Members, a group of retired AT&T employees who do fundraisers and various other projects in the community.
Last Wednesday morning her group presented two benches to Drummonds Elementary School and a third one to the city park next door.
In advance of the ceremony she got on the phone and called various community leaders, including Director of Schools Dr. John Combs and County Executive Jeff Huffman, to make sure they were there Wednesday.
”She pretty much took care of everything,” said Shelley Gaugh, the DES principal.
The benches were made from plastic bottle tops that were collected by her organization, students at DES and various area churches.
Approximately 1,500 pounds of the tops were collected. Kim Lawrence’s kindergarten class collected the most tops in the school and Proctor treated the class to a pizza party as a reward.
The AT&T Life members also do work to support Ronald McDonald House the American Cancer Society.
“The Lord has blessed me,” Proctor said. “I’m just glad I was able to do this.”
