Covington boys and girls down Fayette-Ware, remain perfect in district play

By The Leader on January 17, 2020

On the second night of a four-game road trip, the sixth-ranked Lady Chargers made the trip to Somerville and kept their District 15-AA record unblemished with a 51-31 win over Fayette-Ware.

Covington (15-3, 4-0) led by two at the end of the first period, but then proceeded to pull away, holding Fayette-Ware to single digits and just 19 point over the final three quarters.

Three Lady Chargers reached double figures with Felia Fayne’s game-high 20 points in the paint. Trinity Taylor and Kalynn Howard chipped in 10 apiece.

Christal Ingram and MaKayla Clark dropped in 10 apiece to lead the Lady Wildcats. Neither team got much at the line in a virtually foul-free game. Fayette-Ware connected on 5 of 8 and Covington on 8 of 11 attempts.

CHS has a district game at Bolton today and then closes the road trip at Union City on Saturday.  The team returns home on Jan. 21 to face off with district foe Ripley.

In boys’ action:

The 10th-ranked Chargers visited one of the pre-season favorites in District 15 AA, Fayette-Ware, on Tuesday night and came away with a 74-68 win that kept them atop the district standings.

CHS (15-3, 4-0) led from the outset. They posted a 32-22 lead at the half, expanded it to 13 through three periods and then had to hold on as the Wildcats put up a 27-point final period to close the gap.

For the second straight game, point guard Travontae Powell paced his team with 22 points. Three other Chargers reached double figures. Brandon Alston had 13 in the low blocks, TyJuan Smith scored 12 and Martez Logan 11. Devin Dean added eight.
