Looking to go 3-0 in District 15-AA, the Lady Chargers traveled last Friday to Bolivar, one of the toughest places to play in the district.
The Lady Tigers weren’t up to the task, falling 60-39 to the Lady Chargers, who are ranked sixth in this week’s Associated Press Class 2A state poll.
Kalynn Howard and Trinity Taylor led the way for CHS (14-3, 3-0), tying for game-high scoring honors with 18 points apiece. The two combined for all six of the team’s 3-point shots, making three each. Felia Fayne added 12.
Covington struggled at the free throw line, making just 5 of 28 attempts. Brionna Brooks and Carly Daniel paced the Lady Tigers with eight points each.
In boys’ action:
The Covington Chargers, ranked 10th in this week’s AP poll for Class AA, went into Bolivar on Friday night to challenge “one of the top boy’s teams in 15 AA” according to Charger head coach Charles Mitchell.
Covingston came away with an 83-74 win that featured some high scoring at the guard position.
Covington (14-3, 3-0) took a 22-15 lead after one period only to have the Tigers roar back with a 20-12 second period and a 35-34 lead at the break. Travontae Powell’s 10-point third period helped CHS to a 28-20 third period.
As anticipated, there was a shootout at the guard position. Bolivar’s Jeff Norment won the battle with a game-high 37 points. It was a narrow victory, just eclipsing Powell’s 36-point performance.
Both teams had role players with three Covington players recording double figures. Brandon Alston dropped in 14 points, TyJuan Smith had 12 and Martez Logan 10.
Covington stepped outside the district on Saturday night to take on Little Rock Halls in a showcase in Memphis, The Chargers posted a 54-50 win that polished their resume a bit.
Halls had beaten Memphis Briarcrest, which had defeated the No. 2 team in the country, IMG Academy.
The Chargers were led in scoring by Alston’s game-high 18 points. Powell was right behind with 17 and Smith had 10.
Covington is off on a three-game road trip starting at Fayette-Ware tonight. They play at Bolton on Friday and Union City on Saturday before returning home for a district tilt with Ripley on Jan. 21.
