The anticipation is building as the Covington High School cross country teams prepare to host their 6th annual meet on Thursday, Sept. 21.
“The event promises to be a spectacular showcase of athletic talent, sportsmanship and community spirit,” said Covington coach Sharman Coley.
Over the years, this event has witnessed remarkable growth, drawing teams from various schools, including Obion Central, Martin Westview, Dresden, Huntingdon, Crockett County, Haywood, Lexington, Dyersburg, Dyer county, Munford, Brighton, Hardin County and Hutchison.
“This lineup ensures that the competition will be fierce and the energy will be high,” Coley said.
Runners will navigate a scenic, but challenging, 3.1-mile course that winds through the picturesque Covington Sportsplex campus, encompassing the park, the inviting nature trail, and a sprawling field. This route not only tests the athletes’ endurance, but also allows them to connect with the natural beauty that surrounds them.
The races will kick off at 4:30 p.m., setting the stage for a series of intense, heart-pounding showdowns. The top ten finishers from each race will be rewarded with medals.
A delightful addition this year is a selection of food trucks that will be on hand to offer a variety of delectable options for purchase. From Nan’s Shaved Ice to the savory delights from The Hickory Chip, there will be something to satiate every palate.
The Covington meet is not just a sporting event; it is a full-school affair.
“We are immensely grateful for the generous contributions of time and effort from our faculty, students and parents who volunteer to ensure the smooth running of this event,” Coley said. “Their support is the backbone that allows us to host such a remarkable gathering … We extend an open invitation to the community to witness the triumphs, the camaraderie, and the sheer determination that define the spirit of Charger pride.”
