No hazardous materials aboard train that derailed in Mason Thursday morning

A train through Mason derailed early Thursday morning, the Covington Fire Department has confirmed.

The derailment took place near Old L&N Road, between Williamson and Washington, at approximately 3:40 a.m. Covington Fire Chief Richard Griggs said there were nine cars involved. They were loaded with grain and  no hazardous materials were onboard.

No injuries have been reported and there’s no public health hazard.

Officials with CSX will be working to clean up the wreckage. The cause of the derailment has not yet been reported. A bridge was damaged, but it is not yet known whether the damaged caused or was caused by the derailment.

“Over the next several days, there will be a significant presence of heavy equipment and personnel in the Main Street and Washington Avenue areas,” said Charles Tanner, Mason’s fire chief. “A new road is being laid so that heavy equipment can be brought in to replace the bridge that washed out from yesterday’s rainfall.”

Mason did not respond to the derailment because it was out of the city limits. Covington Fire, which has a hazmat team, responded as did Tipton County Fire Department, Three Star Volunteer Fire Department, Tipton County Sheriff’s Office, and the Tipton County Emergency Management Agency responded to the derailment.

While units were en-route, CSX notified dispatch that there were no hazardous materials involved and there was no need for further resources, Tanner said.

Mason saw another train derailment in October 2020.

This is a breaking news story. The Leader is working to collect more information and will update the story when possible.
