Monday roundup: Munford falls to Dyer County on the road; Covington and TRA earn big wins

Lady Cougars traveled to Newbern for get-back against Dyer County, who sent them home last season in the region semifinals. After three scoreless innings, rookie mistakes from the Munford defense led to the Lady Choctaws coming out on top in a 2-1 win Monday night.

“You can kind of just see how young we are from this and what I told them in the circle is that we have to get out on top early. That’s just how we win a ball game.” Raygan Huffman said.

After each pitcher was delivering outs after outs, the bottom of the fourth is when the slip-ups began when Lexi Billings walked Dyer County shortstop Allie Shires. After striking out two and walking another batter, Billings threw a pitch that got behind freshman Mia Kate Griffin and Shires ran in for the first run of the game.

The following inning with two outs on the board, a hit grounded out to second basemen Jordan Wilson, but she overthrew the ball to where Harper Seiler caught it but her foot was off the bag, marking the hitter safe and another run score in a controversial play.

Billings smacked a deep ball to center field in the seventh that gave Wilson the green light to run home and made it a one run game, but Griffin hit a fly ball to third and concluded the game.

Billings had seven strikeouts with no errors, allowing only three hits. Wilson went 2-for-3 on her at-bats.

It was a loss, but Huffman kept her head up as she knew hiccups costed the game, but they kept up with a team that they may face down the road and polishing their mistakes will prepare them for next game.

“It’s something to learn from, for sure, and I think we will. As long as we take it and learn from it and not harp on it and keep making the same little mistakes, we’ll be alright.” She said.

In other games

Down in Gulf Shores, Madi Hamm hits a solo homerun to lead Covington in a 14-3 win over Jeff Davis. Hamm, Gracen Ramsey, Sarah Ricardson and Anna Reese Cousar collected multiple hits. Kinley Escue struck out five.

Later that day, they fell to Goodpasture 1-10.

TRA puts up 13 runs in a 13-3 win over Millington. Lola Sprenkle and Lanie Howe went perfect on the plate with three and four hits respectively, and Howie drove in four RBIs as well.

Emma Ursery got the start, striking out nine batters and committed one error. Howe came in and struck out four.

In baseball

Like the softball team, Covington split a pair in their opening day at the beach, dropping to Fayette County 5-10. Parker Davis had ten strikeouts with 46 of 69 pitches being strikes. Chris Smith went 3-for-3 on the plate.

They bounced back by beating the Addison Bulldogs 7-1 with Lane Butler going four innings, allowing one run and striking out four. Brayden Turner drove in 2 RBIs.

Brighton couldn’t complete the comeback in a 4-2 loss to TRA. Andrew Davis was on the hill, striking out seven on five hits.

Eli West got the win for the Rebels with seven strikeouts. Ellis Fullen went 2-for-3 to lead all batters in hits.

Gavin Boyles and Luke Lavelle combined for a no-hitter win against Millington in a 10-0 shutout. Boyles got the win, adding ten strikeouts with no errors to his stats. Owen Geiger and Dylan Phillips had multiple hits.
