Tipton County Health Inspection Scores – February 2023

Beginning with our March 9 print edition, The Leader will begin reporting Tipton County’s health inspection scores. These scores include the inspection of restaurants, bars, recreation facilities, schools, tattoo shops, childcare centers and more.

Following are reports from health inspections conducted by the Tennessee Department of Health which took place in Tipton County during February 2023. 

Restaurants & Bars

Zaxby’s- Covington – 95 

1634 Hwy. 51 S Covington, TN 38019

Routine Food Service Establishment Inspection on Feb. 6 

Observations, correction actions, additional notes: No thermometer in front reach in cooler. Cases of frozen chicken breast fillets stored on floor in back of store. Employee drinks with lids and straws on prep table; no one dinking from them. Employee has hair down to the back of knees and it is not tied back to keep it from swinging around to the front of her body; needs to be controlled better. Drain tray under tea station needs to be cleaned. Missing ceiling tile in back room above The Blue Box relay panel.

Dairy Queen of Atoka – 99

Routine Food Service Establishment Inspection on Feb. 6 

Observations, correction actions, additional notes: Wet nesting of plastic containers on shelves by ice machine. No permit posted. No inspection posted.

McDonald’s – 98 

887 N. Highway 51 Covington, TN 38019

Routine Food Service Establishment Inspection on Feb. 10 

Observations, correction actions, additional notes: Wet nesting of plastic containers on shelves in back room. Roof leak in walk in cooler. Condenser leak in walk in freezer causing ice build up on floor.

Casa Mexicana – 71

Routine Food Service Establishment Inspection on Feb. 15 

Observations, correction actions, additional notes: With the number of priority violations (and 1 of them being a 2nd consecutive violation), the PIC does not seem to have total comprehension/control of the level of knowledge required to prevent these types of violations. No soap at hand sink in kitchen (corrected on site during inspection). Case of squash with mold on the zuchini. Embargoed 5 lbs of yellow squash and zuchini. Cans severely dented and stored with other cans on shelves to be used. No dented can area to separate to return to delivery source. Drawer cooler reading 48° and beef that was put in cooler at 9AM today measured at 51° (revocation warning letter requested for repeat consecutive). Embargoed 5 lbs of steak strips. Put the chicken in the walk in cooler. No dates on any prepared foods in walk in cooler. Thawing of chicken wings done on prep table in back room, still below 40° so moved to walk in cooler. No thermometer in reach in cooler by griddle. Large containers of rice and dried beans are not labeled. Cell phone stored on prep table outside walk in cooler. Wet wiping cloths on several prep tables. Using a styrofoam cup to dispense Jamaica from larger container. Wet nesting of metal pans above hand washing sink. Plates stored on prep line food side up. Paper towels in men’s room are stored on back of toilet – not in dispenser.

Observations, correction actions, additional notes: Wet nesting of drink cups on plastic shelves by beer cooler. Silverware stored in plastic tote with handles in different directions. Self closing apparatus for men’s room is missing.

Single-use/single-service articles; properly stored, used. Toilet facilities: properly constructed, supplied, cleaned.

Observations, correction actions, additional notes: Wet wiping cloth on bar service area. Knives laying on table in back room. Wet nesting of metal pans on shelf above 3 comp sink. No lidded trash can in stall in ladies’ room.

In-use utensil; properly stored. Utensils, equipment and linens; properly stored, dried, handled. Toilet facilities: properly constructed, supplied, cleaned.

Observations, correction actions, additional notes: Using plastic to-go cups to scoop salt from white container of salt. Cutlery is stored handle side down before being wrapped in napkins by staff. Wet nesting of plastic containers on wire shelf above 3 comp sink. Plates are stored food side up on shelves above steam table. No test strips for QA for 3 comp sink.
